it's on like boiled corn

'it's on like boiled corn' is my new solo album released on Norwegianism Records. The album is a series of short improvisations and explores similar territory to my previous solo album 'Antennae', using a strict palette of minimal saxophone sounds, with an emphasis on breath and mechanical noises over "pure/natural" notes.

The album is currently available only as a limited edition CD (50 copies), and a download option will be available soon.

Webster / Lisle / Ward - Red Kite

'Red Kite' is the debut album by my new trio with Alex Ward (guitar) and Andrew Lisle (drums). The album is available now to download from Raw Tonk Records, and a CD version will be available soon.

The trio was formed especially for the recording session, prompted by the offer of studio time from Sam Thredder at The Cro's Nest. The album was improvised in the studio, recorded directly to reel-to-reel tape, and mastered by the excellent Marlon Wolterink.

Duo with Mike Hurley

In May I performed an improv duo set with pianist Mike Hurley at The Lamp Tavern in Birmingham. This was the first time we had met and played together, and I've posted some of the set below for streaming. It was a great experience, full of deep listening and exploration of sounds.

Nematodes 3" CDr

First release of 2013, and also probably the smallest format and shortest-run release - 3" CDr by Nematodes: 'An Outside With An Inside In It'. 20 minutes of noisy improv by Max Leonard Hitchings on drums, Jussi Brightmore on processed harmonica and voice, and myself on tenor sax. It's a live recording of a gig at Power Lunches in Dalston last year. Only 50 copies have been pressed, and currently only available at gigs.

Gaffer Fest Recording

In October my duo with Mark Holub played at Gaffer Fest in Lyon. I've posted my recordings of our whole set here for streaming and download. The recordings are just from the stage, so aren't high quality, but you get the feeling of what was a great night and a really excellent festival programmed by Frank from Gaffer Records. At the time I had mixed feelings about the set as we had both had very early flights to Lyon and the energy levels were quite low. But in retrospect I'm really pleased with how it turned out!
