Drop Out

New cassette release on the Astral Spirits label from Austin, Texas. 'Drop Out' is a studio session with David Birchall (guitar) and Rogier Smal (drums) recorded on the last day of our UK tour last year.

"This is communal music making to blow the roof off, the trio letting rip with a rackety drive that’s as infectious as it is abrasive, the open-endedness of free improvisation driven forward by a rocket fuel bootlegged from free jazz’s volcanic wellspring." - Paul Margree, We Need No Swords (full review)

"The nervy skronk of the first side has Webster spitting out staccato phrases, while Birchall switches between high-end slide squall reminiscent of Borbetomagus's Donald Miller, and lunging stoner riffage. Smal ramps it all up by hammering at his snare like a speed-addled carpenter, before dialling things back for a twitchy and atmospheric passage that ultimately takes off like peppercorns on a hot skillet." - Stewart Smith, The Quietus (full review)

Line-up: David Birchall - guitar, Rogier Smal - drums, Colin Webster - alto saxophone

Roji

Roji is a new project by Gonçalo Almeida (bass and loops) and Jörg Schneider (drums). They asked me to record some baritone on three tracks for their album 'The Hundred Headed Women', which has been released on CD by the Shhpuma / Cleanfeed label. The album also features three tracks with trumpet from Susana Santos Silva.

"To simplify, we can say that this recording sounds almost like an encounter between Bill Laswell and Mick Harris (Napalm Death), but simultaneously more trashy and more jazzy, more Public Image Limited and more Sunn 00))). We can compare Roji with the Italian band Zu, but there’s a fundamental difference: this isn’t fun. It’s amazing, in a very dark, frightening way. The movie “Antichrist” by Lars von Triers found a better soundtrack."

Line-up: Gonçalo Almeida - bass and loops, Jörg A. Schneider - drums, Guests: Susana Santos Silva - trumpet, Colin Webster - baritone sax

'Red Kite' is the debut album by my new trio with Alex Ward (guitar) and Andrew Lisle (drums). The album is available now to download from Raw Tonk Records, and a CD version will be available soon.

Viscera - Available Now

'Viscera' - my new duo album with Mark Holub is now available on CD and download from New Atlantis Records, and also direct from us via our bandcamp page.

The album was recorded in one day at the notorious Dropout Studios in South London. No discussion was had before takes, and no pre-arranged ideas were presented, with the exception of the last track - a version of Roscoe Mitchell's 'Chant'. The album is pure, in-the-moment, high-energy, free jazz!
